  • At or near the point of generation. This means in the lab where the hazardous material was used.

 

  • Up to a total of 55 gallons or 1 qt of acutely hazardous (p list) waste allowed in storage

 

  • Under control of the person(s) generating the waste.

 

  • Person(s) generating the waste responsible for initial waste determination

   

 

    How to Store Your Hazardous Wastes-Container Management

Containers must be:

1.Closed at all times when contents not being added.

a.Lids must close tightly (i.e., no foils, loose stoppers, Para film)

2.Properly labeled

a.Contents Identified

b.Affix sticker provided by EHS or write “waste” next to content listing.  

3.Segregated by hazard type.

4.Compatible with waste.

5.Non-leaking, free of drips, .

An Open Container of Hazardous Waste Can Cost Big $

nRCRA penalties for 1 open container can run as much as $5000/day

nMake sure all your containers are closed at all times except when adding/removing contents unless the contents are clearly identified as non-hazardous.

nDon’t forget to remove funnels and replace lids promptly after adding contents!
